Three similar names, three different systems.
A standalone Android head unit behaves like an Android tablet built into the dashboard. It can install compatible APKs directly and may have its own GPS antenna, storage, Wi-Fi, and mobile-data connection.
Android Auto projects supported apps from a connected phone. Android Automotive OS is built into supported vehicles and uses apps designed for that automotive platform. An APK intended for a standalone Android tablet is not automatically an Android Auto or Android Automotive app.
Check more than the Android number.
“Android 6” or “Android 10” on a settings page does not prove the unit can render a modern navigation app. Older and vendor-modified devices vary widely. Record these details while parked:
- Android version and security patch level.
- Android System WebView or browser engine version.
- Screen resolution, orientation, and available graphics support.
- Free internal storage and working memory.
- Built-in GPS availability, antenna connection, and location permission.
- Wi-Fi or hotspot access for initial map and update downloads.
- Whether the device permits verified APK installation from the chosen source.
Driftistan Car includes a compatibility report for these signals. Installation success alone cannot verify map tiles, sensors, GPS accuracy, or graphics behavior.
Use a parked, reversible setup.
- Park safely, keep the vehicle powered according to its manual, and record the existing launcher and navigation settings.
- Download only from the app developer’s official HTTPS page. For Driftistan, use the public car-display download and compare the published version and SHA-256 information.
- If the unit has a supported app store or vendor update channel, update Android System WebView from that trusted source.
- Install the package and grant only the permissions required for the feature being tested. Navigation needs location; it does not justify unrelated permissions.
- Open the app before driving. Confirm menus fit the real screen and that back, home, and recovery controls remain reachable.
Prove the essentials in the car park.
Wait for a GPS fix with a clear view of the sky. The map should show a plausible position, not simply the last known location. Rotate or change orientation only after the first stable fix, then verify that the vehicle marker, road direction, and recenter control remain aligned.
Search for a nearby destination while parked and inspect the route. If the trip will cross weak coverage, download the relevant area and perform a short offline test before departure. A cached screen is not proof of complete offline routing.
What common failures usually mean.
Black or white screen
Check the WebView/browser engine, available memory, graphics support, and the app’s compatibility report. Reinstalling repeatedly does not repair an obsolete rendering engine.
Map but no position
Verify location permission, the GPS antenna, the system location switch, and whether other standalone GPS apps can obtain a current fix.
Position but no map
Test the internet or hotspot, device date and certificate trust, storage, and downloaded offline coverage. GPS and map tiles are separate systems.
Severe lag or heat
Reduce visual detail, close competing apps, avoid charging in direct sun, and use the lighter car edition. Stop if the unit becomes abnormally hot.
Do not turn a navigation install into a firmware experiment.
Do not root, flash, or replace the head-unit operating system merely to install a navigation app. A wrong firmware image can disable audio, steering-wheel controls, cameras, CAN-bus integration, or the entire display. Use official vehicle or device support for system updates.
Never configure routes or troubleshoot menus while driving. Finish the setup while parked and let a passenger handle any necessary change on the road.
